Okiki Podcast Episode 5- Davy Sage
David Sanni, professionally known as Davy Sage, is a Nigerian born Pop and RnB recording artist & songwriter hailing from Regina, Saskatchewan Canada.
I found Davy Sage on SaskMusic.com, a music association I am a member of in the province of Saskatchewan. I happen to be a passionate musician and singer-songwriter, and I was shocked and excited to see them highlighting an artist who appeared to be of Nigerian descent on their Twitter.
I was curious about this artist I had discovered. I knew I had to reach out to him and find out how he became successful with Afro-Beat music in Saskatchewan and Canada. Afro Beat music, is a music genre that is mainly popular in Nigeria and West Africa. I wanted to know how he was making waves with this genre here in North America.
Key Takeaways:
1) It is crucial to have a clear understanding of your path as an artist.
2) Using the fact that his music was a novel style in his city allowed him to stand out and build a portfolio.
3) Creating music that is relatable helped him to reach audiences in North America.
4) Before artists chase after labels, now labels chase after artists.
5) Partner with local organizations that fund music initiatives.
